Chapter Sixteen

The gym wasn’t one of those smelly gyms like the one in my old high school. Instead, it boasted clean soft-matted flooring and what looked like freshly whitewashed walls. And there was air conditioning.

Bless this school.

“Today, we will be running through the Bleak Forest. But this will not be an ordinary run.”

My coach back in high school was a pot-bellied sucker with red baseball shorts and a whistle bent from being between his teeth for too long. But this guy? He could give Dwayne Johnson a run for his money in both the muscle and the looks department. He had some kind of crest tattooed on his arm and the eagle atop it moved with the flex of his muscle.

He continued, “While you run through the woods, there will be obstacles, both living and not living. Watch your step and be aware of your surroundings. But, first, we were promised some sparring demonstrations from the Volkov Brothers.”

There were a few hoots and whistles from the direction of the Hellcats who’d apparently had both their gym shorts and shirts hemmed in a way that made them look appropriate for a nightclub instead of running.

I kind of hoped there were thorns in the woods—just for them.

In a blur, the brothers moved to the center of the group of students. I gasped at the fluidity of their motions but covered it with a cough.

Syn and Danger were up first, and their fighting looked like more of a dance than a war. I didn’t think either one ever made contact with the other’s body.

Roth and Fury fist-bumped their brothers and joined in. My nerd brain wanted to take notes on the way they anticipated moves and prepared the proper defense, but I knew even if I had a notebook at my disposal, it would be impossible. I couldn’t look away. Their bodies held my gaze captive, and it wasn’t until coach blew the whistle that my trance was broken.

We were split up into pairs—AJ held on to my arm for dear life until the coach relented with a nod and made us a grouping.

“After you are passing creek, there is hole. Don’t fall in,” a voice whispered in my ear.

My skin prickled with a thousand goose bumps, and a shiver pulsed over my body. I turned to find Syn looking down, hands crossed over his groin.

I knew it was him. I would know that voice anywhere.

“Oh, God! Coach! Can we get her to put some pants on? That’s disgusting.”

I looked down to see where Lauren pointed and saw the silvery remnants of my bite on my leg.

I actually thought it was kind of pretty with notes of light pink and iridescence.

Her friends giggled at her antics, and so did a few of our classmates.

“Lauren, please get a grip. No one has time for your drama today,” the coach said then gave me a wink. “Let me go see if everything is ready for this run. Boys, come with me.” He tipped his head at the Volkovs.
